BOROUGH PAIRS Bowls Competitions

OUTDOOR BOWLS
BOROUGH PAIRS COMPETITIONS 2011

Great bowling at the end of 2011 Borough Pairs competitions

In fine weather conditions and on the Redhill Bowls Club’s very good green, the semi-finals and finals of the 2011 Borough Pairs competitions for the Surrey Mirror Trophies produced some really excellent bowling in games more evenly matched than the eventual scores may imply.

In the Men’s semi-finals,
  • Fred Willey and Brian Gaunt (Redhill) had a 1 shot lead after 5 ends in their game against Dickie Day and Eric Batchelor (Chipstead) – last years winners – but then allowed their opponents to move to a 9 shot advantage after 10 ends. Although the Redhill pair pulled back, they could not prevail against the excellent bowling of their opponents, with the score at 18 ends 13-17.
  • Dave Botting and DT Pearce (Chipstead) v David File and Ivor Gillespie (Horley) proved to be a rather strange game. After 6 ends the score was 9-1 to the Horley team; at that point fortunes changed with Chipstead gaining 10 shots in the next 3 ends. Horley then rallied to win 5 of the last 6 ends to take the game 22-15.
In the Ladies’ semi-finals,
  • Jill Huggett and Barbara Ingram (Reigate Priory) played last year’s winners Marie Sanderson and Gill Tarrant (Monotype). The Priory ladies led from the start, achieving a 9 shot difference after 12 ends but the holders then had a good run, reducing the deficit to only 2 shots after 17 ends. However Priory managed to score 3 shots on the last end to take the game 19-14.
  • Sally Wilson and Fiona Leeson (Chipstead) found some tough opposition in Brenda Avery and Sylvia Collingwood (Redhill) with the Redhill ladies on top form taking the game 27-8. This was a game in which the score certainly did not reflect the high quality of the play.

In the Men’s final in the afternoon, David File and Ivor Gillespie (Horley) found themselves up against last year’s winners, Dickie Day and Eric Batchelor (Chipstead). This was another game with the lead changing several times, culminating in an exciting finish. Having taken the lead in the early ends, after 16 ends, the Horley pair were trailing 17-21. They then picked up 6 shots and the game went into the final end with a shot difference of only 2 – a lead which the cup holders could not overturn with the final score 24-21. Some really excellent bowling was enjoyed by the good crowd of supporting spectators.

The Ladies’ final between Jill Huggett and Barbara Ingram (Reigate Priory) and Brenda Avery and Sylvia Collingwood (Redhill) proved rather one sided with the Priory ladies’ accurate bowling proving far too strong for the Redhill pair who were unable to repeat their high standard of the semi-final. With the Priory pair leading from the 2nd end, the match was won 24-4.

It was generally thought that the competitions had produced a very high standard of bowling, played throughout in a manner both friendly and competitive as befits a tournament between members of 6 local clubs.

At the presentation of prizes, Frank Hall on behalf of the District Sports Council, expressed congratulations to the winners; appreciation of the support from both clubs and players; especial thanks to the Redhill club and its members for hosting the semi-finals and finals; thanks to Betty Wall for umpiring the day; and finally appreciation to the Surrey Mirror for publicity support and the gift of the trophies. He also confirmed that he would not be running the competitions in 2012 but that the Horley club would take on that task for the year, with the 2012 semi-finals and finals scheduled for Sunday 26 August. It was hoped other clubs would follow Horley on a rota basis in future years.

Prizes were then presented to winners and finalists by Louise Poynton, Group Sports editor of the Surrey Mirror who expressed particular thanks to Frank Hall for organising the Borough Pairs for the last 4 years.

Redhill Bowls Club have kindly offered to host the semi-finals and finals on Saturday 3rd September 2011. Earlier rounds will be played as arranged by the team designated as the ‘challenger’ at a time agreed with their opponents.

Last year there was great support for these competitions which were played in a good spirit and thoroughly enjoyed by both participants and spectators.

FINAL RESULTS 2010

The semi-finals and finals of the 2010 Boro Pairs competitions took place at the Reigate Priory Bowls Club on Sunday 4th September 2010.

In fine weather, there was some excellent bowling and a very enthralling finish particularly in the Ladies’ final between last year’s winners (Eileen Baldry and Pat Capper) and a new entry from Monotype (Gill Tarrant and Marie Sanderson). The game was very tight throughout with the advantage changing several times. With the scores tied 16 each at the end of the game, an extra end had to be played during practically all of which the holders were in the lead but their opponent’s skip with her last-but-one bowl put one on the jack.

The Men’s final started with the eventual winners gaining 9 shots in the first two ends but by the sixth end the score was 9-8. The lead did not change hands at all but the match remained very tight – 15-13 after thirteen ends – with a finishing score of 21 -15.
The semi-finals also produced some good entertaining bowling with matches much closer than the score always showed.

In both the morning and afternoon, there were a large number of supporters and other spectators to enjoy good competitive bowling in a most pleasant setting.

At the end of the finals, the Surrey Mirror trophies and prizes were presented to winners and finalists by Louise Poynton, Group Sports Editor, East Surrey and Sussex Newspapers.

The Reigate Priory Club proved excellent hosts for the event and Jeni Stewart and the club’s team of workers were congratulated and thanked for all their efforts.

INCREASED SUPPORT FOR THE BORO PAIRS COMPETITIONS

The Borough Pairs Bowls Competitions for the Surrey Mirror Trophies has attracted 38 pairs for the Men’s competition (6 more than last year) and 15 pairs for the Ladies’ (up 1).
